Here's why students need to be encouraged into startup culture: AICTE

Here's why students need to be encouraged into startup culture: AICTE

There is a need to bring students into the startup culture and to provide them a platform where they can convert their bright ideas into innovation, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Chairman Anil D Sahasrabudhe said on September 7.
He was addressing a gathering on the occasion of the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research 51st Annual Day at the NITTTR campus in Chandigarh.
Sahasrabudhe said that the AICTE is not just a regulator but also a facilitator committed to improving the quality of technical education.
A NEED TO CONVERT BRIGHT IDEAS INTO INNOVATION
"There is a need to bring students into startup culture and to provide them a platform where they can convert their bright ideas into innovation," he told the PTI.
"We should create a support system for students, including more internship or skill programme, to hone their skills," he said.
MAJOR CHALLENGES
The lack of resources and unemployment are the major challenges, Sahasrabudhe said, adding that we should focus on startups.
The AICTE has made its own startup policy through which universities and colleges along with their normal courses will start entrepreneurship courses, he said.
He said that lab and research centres should be opened for 24 hours for students so that they can do research and draw their ideas.
LOT OF POTENTIAL BUT NEED TO IDENTIFY IDEAS
"The Indian students have a lot of potential, we just need to identify and channelize their ideas in the right direction," Sahasrabudhe said.
He shared his views on challenges faced by technical education in the country and appreciated the new initiatives and innovations being undertaken by this institute for technical teacher training to improve the quality of technical education.
He assured the support of the AICTE to the institute towards qualitative improvement of technical education in the country.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has asked faculty and students of technical education institutions to refer to books written by Indian authors
By Express News Service

COIMBATORE: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has asked faculty and students of technical education institutions to refer to books written by Indian authors. This comes along the line of initiatives taken by the apex regulatory body to improve overall quality of technical education in the country.
The launch of model curriculum for UG and PG courses in engineering and technology by Minster of Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar this January was one such initiative. This model curriculum has already been adopted by many universities and institutions from this academic year, said AICTE chairman Anil D Sahasrabudhe in a letter to the vice-chancellors and registrars of technical universities and principals of technical institutions.
In the same breath, for the benefit of students pursuing courses in engineering disciplines, books by Indian authors and publishers have been suggested by a committee of eminent experts, as per model curriculum of AICTE. “I believe that these books, drawing from the experience of Indian authors and contextualised to Indian settings, will definitely aid the students in better learning of the concepts and in turn improve their quality,” he added.
These books need more encouragement among students and teachers; this interest will prompt many Indian authors to pen new technical books and in new areas too, augmenting the horizon of technical education in the Indian scenario, he opined. He also requested V-Cs, registrars and principals to impress upon faculty and students the need to refer to books by Indian authors and publishers available on AICTE website.
AICTE, in February came out with a list of books written by Indian authors and publishers. This included basic science, engineering science, humanities and social science subjects, which the students will be studying in the first year, and specific engineering books.

"Data mining and artificial intelligence is a key enabler in talent acquisition" - Santanu Ghoshal, Vice President-Human Resource, Schaeffler India

"Data mining and artificial intelligence is a key enabler in talent acquisition"
Santanu Ghoshal, Vice President-Human Resource, Schaeffler India discusses with Careers360 on bridging the industry-academia gap to fill the skill gap...
Q. How technology interventions have impacted the hiring trends, could you share some of the new practices being involved?
A. Technology application is getting more widely used in the entire value chain of selection process. Although core companies are not one of the early adaptors, they started realising the benefit and quickly embracing the change. Many of these applications are becoming far more intuitive than just a process enabler. Right from getting accurate profile to doing a verification check, HR managers are relying more and more on technology. How our HR team is keeping connect with prospective talent pool, will play a critical attraction driver. In the coming 3-4 quarters, when economy and talent market is in full swing, we will always be benefited, if we can combine right strategy of technology adoption and right talent relationship management.
Application of data mining and artificial intelligence is a key enabler today for better decision making. It is a two-way process. Candidates can also easily access the company’s information and get reviews and credentials. In Schaeffler India, we started working with couple of such tools and our digital team is focusing on our branding strategy. We foresee that digitalisation will play a critical role in coming days.
Q. Many of the reports have highlighted that around 60-70% percent of engineering graduates are unemployable, what are the reasons according to you?
A. We seem to be living in a paradoxical situation where our colleges churning out huge quantity of engineers but industry is struggling to get right talent. There is disparity in the skills and knowledge imparted in colleges and the skills demanded in the industry. A carefully designed and well-planned education system is critical to developing the required human capital. Students also should be exposure soft skills to be successful in industry. Also, with the rapidly changing technological environment, a revamp of the teaching and learning processes in engineering colleges is required. Our educational institutions and curriculum play a very important role in creating employable engineering graduates. We also require close collaboration between the corporate sector and engineering institutions to fill the skill gap.
Q. What would be your suggestions to bridge the industry-academia gap so that it’s a win-win situation for both?
A. There is a need for aligning the curriculum with the industry needs. Also, the companies should step in and provide a platform for students to gain practical knowledge on the subjects of interest. At Schaeffler India, we have initiated ‘Open inspiration’ program to offer an innovation platform for engineering students across cities. The program which started the screening processes last year was concluded early this year with selected teams/students showcasing their innovative ideas and products focussed on developing sustainable solutions for a better tomorrow.
Q. Kindly share some of the best HR practices to adhere to for creating a happy workplace for employees?
A. We, at Schaeffler strive to build a culture that inspires people to ideate and implement. We have the concept where someone can work on new ideas without a pressure on return on investment. We encourage our employees to experiment and learn from their experience.
We also have an excellent talent management system which has a strong emphasis on employee development part as well as annual goal achievement. Currently, we are working on creating a tool which allows managers to give real time performance feedback. We are also looking at improving the maturity level of our performance management system. This should act as an enabler towards creating a performance culture, higher engagement level and constructive and continuous feedback culture towards developing our people and thus creating a happy workplace for them.

National Teachers Day 2018: AICTE to train teachers about blend learning and technology

National Teachers Day 2018: AICTE to train teachers about blend learning and technology

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has planned to start a training programme for the teachers which will aim to make them tech-savvy and understand the concept of blend learning. The blend learning is an education programme (formal or non-formal) that combines online digital media with traditional classroom methods. Manpreet Singh Manna, Director (PMSSS & SWAYAM), stated to the Times of India, "As many as 75 National Resource Centres (NRC) across the country will create 40 hours content for various field, including Science, Literature, Law among others, and it will be a fresher course for teachers to know how to be in pace with the changing technology and specialise in his or her domain."
"A need was felt to bridge the gap between teachers and students, who are tech-savvy and depend more on online platforms for their studies. We have roped in central universities, IITs, NITs for creating content to provide teaching pedagogy of a particular subject,” he added.
Mentioning an example, Manna said if one has pursued Civil Engineering during their undergraduate and postgraduation, but he lacked basic teaching sense, teaching aptitude and latest trends of classrooms, this programme will help to bridge that gap.
"It has been created with an objective to make classrooms interesting for students, who feel that teachers lack knowledge of latest industry trends." The target is to train all the faculties, consisting of 6 lakh teachers under the domain of AICTE.
