Spl panel to improve tech education
Aurangabad: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the state directorate of technical education (DTE) has formed a core advisory committee for bringing in quality improvement in technical education offered across Maharashtra.The 19-member panel, which comprises industry captains, heads of reputed technical institutions and senior government officials among others, will serve as consultant body for the state government.
Headed by AD Shahane, vice-president of L&T, Mumbai, the panel is expected to meet at least twice in every academic year.
DTE acting joint director, Mumbai region, SP Yavalkar, who is an ex-officio member-secretary of the core advisory committee, on Sunday, said that the newly formed panel would have long-term positive impact on technical education in the state as the committee is expected to help the DTE in fine-tuning and shaping policies governing technical education. “The panel has balanced representation from industry, academia and bureaucracy and would definitely bring in positive change,” he said.
Yavalkar added that technical institutions offering both degree and diploma programmes would fall under the panel’s decision ambit.
Suggesting new schemes for quality improvement in education, development and strengthening of industry-institute linkages, and coming out with recommendations for increasing job placement activities are some of the key responsibilities core advisory committee is expected to execute. It is also expected to help DTE by offering assistance in keeping the various professional programmes up to date and framing policies pertaining to training of teacher and students in industries. Among other responsibilities, the panel has been asked to render guidance on research and development activities, filing of patents and publishing research papers.
In a latest official communication, notifying formation of the core advisory committee, DTE director Abhay Wagh has said that panel would assist in planning and quality improvement of technical education in the state.
Some of the key members of the core advisory committee include Vice-chancellor of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University Vilas Gaikar, Sanjay Inamdar from Bhau Institute of Innovation of College of Engineering Pune, Confederation of Indian Industry, Western region director Swagat Mukharji, TR Vavia from Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, VJTI dean (R&D) Farooq Kazi, JJ College of Architecture principal Rajeev Mishra and Sydenham Institute of Management director Manoj Bhide.
The panel also has six special invitees that include charted accountant Prakash Page, Board of Apprenticeship Training (western region) director PN Jumale, AICTE western region in-charge and retired joint secretary of law and judiciary department of the state government.
