Over 50,000 students to appear for engineering exams next week

Mumbai: Over 50,000 students will appear for engineering examinations starting from May 8. Teachers have been asked to give priority to managing these examinations, invigilation work and assessment of answer sheets as engineering is one of the largest programmes of Mumbai University (MU) with the maximum number of students.

Examinations of semesters 1, 2, 7 and 8 are conducted by the MU while semester 3 to 6 are conducted by respective colleges.
Vinod Malale, a senior officer managing examinations of MU, said, “We conduct semester examinations of the first-year and final-year of the engineerimg programme. Conducting examinations of the second-year and the third-year is the responsibility of the college.”

First-year and final-year students who have been preparing for these examinations claimed that they need help from teachers to solve last minute queries. Faisal Mahmood, a first-year student, said, “Our examinations are tedious as they go on for over a month. We need help from teachers as it is our first year and we are yet not well acquainted with the course.”

Vallu Keshu, a final-year student, said, “This is my last semester examination and I do not want to make any mistakes. I hope teachers and faculty guides will help us if we have any last minute doubts. I have already secured a job through the placement and I just need to clear this last examination.”

This is the last time that engineering students will have holiday gaps of three to four days between two examinations. The university aims to cut down this holiday gap to one or two days from next semester. A senior officer of MU said, “We want to finish the examination in less time so that we can have sufficient time for assessment and declaration of results on time. Students will also be relieved as the examinations will not be prolonged and tedious.”

Teachers have been informed to give priority to supervision of examinations and assessment of answer scripts. Malale said, “Engineering is one of our major programmes as we have large number of students. Teachers have to focus on examination and assessment work during this period.”
