100 percent vacancy in engineering seats in Nagaland

100 percent vacancy in engineering seats in Nagaland

The Northeastern state of Nagaland, which recently formed a coalition government with Bharatiya Janata Party, has 100 percent vacancy in engineering seats.
As per the latest data shared by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the only engineering college in the state which offers 240 seats does not even have a single taker. AICTE is the nodal body under Ministry of Human Resource Development, looking after technical education in the country.
Nagaland is the worst hit among other Northesatern states where there are more takers for engineering seats. The state of education in the state is bad as the government has not been able to provide enough quality institutions to cater to students, specially in interior areas. Most of the children in interior parts of the state opt for schools that are run by missionaries. Locals blamed the state government for the condition and see a hope for change after a coalition with BJP.
After Nagaland, Meghalaya has the largest vacancies of engineering seats -- 47 percent, Manipur has no vacancies at all, 18 colleges in Assam have 34 percent vacancies, others including Sikkim and Tripura are at a better position with less than 40 percent vacancies.
Northeast is the latest to be hit by the BJP wave where Tripura emerged as the biggest surprise, overturning years of Left rule to elect BJP to power.
The AICTE data which reveals the state of engineering education in the country also revealed that 50 percent of the total seats across engineering colleges in the country are currently vacant and many states have given proposals to AICTE to put a ban on expansion of more seats.
In order to increase enrolment in the institutions AICTE is implementing scholarship schemes for girls and differently able students for taking up technical education. These institutions have also been granted permission to run D.Voc and B.Voc courses on their premises.
